When you think of papaya, you may think of the tropics. Hear the word and you’re immediately sitting on a beach somewhere enjoying a warm sun, blue waters, and a gentle breeze. Along with that, you might be enjoying a tropical drink or dish that includes papaya.
Papaya is a very nutritious and healing food. It is also very versatile. It can be eaten on its own, or prepared in a number of ways, or included with many other foods that compliment its thick, rich texture and unique flavor.
The fruit is fleshy and creamy. If you’ve never had a papaya, it’s flavor and texture remind one of something close to a cross between a mango and a cantaloupe.
As it is more widely available than it used to be, there’s no reason not try it if you never have, or reintroduce it to your diet if it’s been a while. Its versatility lends itself well to smoothies, cereal and oatmeal, salads, salsa, yogurt and ice cream, curries and stir-frys.
The following are some of the many benefits of this wonderful fruit, which is much easier to enjoy now than it used to be.
Lots of Vitamins and Minerals
Papaya is very high in vitamin C; a small to medium size fruit can contain 150% or more of the recommended daily allowance. It also has a good amount of Vitamin A, potassium, and folate.
Can Reduce Cancer Risk
Lycopene can help reduce oxidative stress, which can, in turn, reduce the risk of cancer. It can also help those who already suffer from cancer.
Contains Strong Antioxidants
The carotenoids found in papayas are powerful antioxidants that can remove free radicals. Free radicals can promote diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s.
Can Be Good For Digestion
The enzyme in papayas can help with digestion; particularly proteins. Anyone who is a meat eater, or anyone with digestive issues might wish to look into taking papaya. (Consult with your doctor, particularly if you already take any kind of medication.)
Good For Your Heart
Eating healthy food and exercise are two things most people will agree are good for your health. One of the most important things you can do is incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet. Papaya, due to its nutritional value, is a great candidate when it comes to eating foods that can help your heart. Papayas, as previously mentioned, contain anti-oxidants. Eating papaya can also lower your blood pressure and cholesterol, which can lead to lowering your chance for developing cardiovascular disease.
Reduces Inflammation
Another benefit of papaya is that it contains choline, which not only helps with aiding muscles and the memory, but it can also help the nervous system and inflammation. If you suffer from chronic inflammation, adding papaya to smoothies or oatmeal in the morning, or putting chunks of it in a salad, might help your body when it comes to the pain and discomfort associated with the condition.
Can Help with Diabetes
Those who suffer from Type II Diabetes might want to give papaya a try. Studies have shown that a small papaya can improve insulin levels and regulate blood sugar.
As stated above, papaya is a healthy, tasty way to nourish and heal your body. It is also a very versatile fruit. If you’d like to give it a try for your next meal, check out our Vegan Tropical Oatmeal Bowl!
